SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS REALTOR® JERRY BIRDSONG EARNS MILITARY RELOCATION PROFESSIONAL (MRP) CERTIFICATION

My passion is for educating our Military and Veteran communities of their VA home-buying entitlement.”
— Jerry Birdsong

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, USA, January 3, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Jerry Birdsong is a retired Navy Veteran and an insightful, caring, conscientious Real Estate Agent at Century 21 Northside in San Antonio, Texas.

Jerry spent his entire pre-Navy life the San Francisco Bay Area. While a senior at San Leandro High School in 1963 - the peak of the Vietnam conflict - he enlisted in the Naval Reserve’s 2x6 program as a Communications Technician (later re-designated as “Cryptologic Technician”).

Jerry attended Recruit Training in San Diego over the Christmas holiday break. After high school, Jerry completed a foreign language studies Associate in Arts degree.

Jerry and Kat married in May 1967. Jerry is firm that, “The most important part of high school was finding Kat, my future wife of 50+ years, in a memorable summer school Chemistry class.”

The Birdsong family active-duty adventure kicked off in late 1967 at Class “A” school in Pensacola, FL. Graduating with a perfect academic record, Petty Officer Birdsong was recommended for promotion to CTT2 upon completion of training. He sewed on his “second class crow” shortly after assignment to Puerto Rico. In 1970, still in Puerto Rico, Jerry was promoted to CTT1, well ahead of his peers.

During follow on assignment in Okinawa, CTT1, Birdsong excelled as Research and Development Leading Petty Officer (LPO). Most memorable: The birth of Anthony, now a career Soldier, and the reversion of Okinawa to Japanese control. Conversion from dollars to Yen was challenging for everyone.

Next on the Birdsong adventure would be his assignment to Adak, Alaska, deep in the Aleutian Islands. The remote nature of Adak led to an “unaccompanied” assignment. Kat and Tony stayed with family in California. Their daughter, Christine, was born in Oak Knoll Naval Hospital, were her mother was born in 28 years earlier. Christine served honorably as a combat Soldier with 1st Cav in Iraq (twice) and Afghanistan.

In 1975, CTT1 Birdsong joined a select group of instructor staff in Pensacola, Florida. Highlights: Qualification as a Master Training Specialist and promotion to Chief Petty Officer in 1977. In Jerry’s words, “Joining the CPO ranks is the singular achievement for an enlisted Sailor. It is a fraternity for life.”

The Birdsong family’s new Naval career of 22 years began in 1979 in San Vito, Italy, where Chief Birdsong learned of his selection as Limited Duty Officer. Mr. Birdsong progressed through the officer ranks with on-time promotions to the grade of Commander (Lt. Colonel equivalent) while on shore duty assignments to the National Security Agency (2 tours), Northern California, Rota Spain, USS Texas (CGN39) home ported in Alameda CA, Pacific Fleet Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) at SURFPAC San Diego, and Executive Officer in San Antonio. While assigned to Rota, Spain, LT Birdsong served as Division Officer in five ships in a fleet direct support role with teams of Rota-based specialists.

USS Connolly (DD979) was part of the USS Saratoga battle group during strike on Tripoli, inside the Libya “Line of Death.” Connolly also went into the Russian back yard during a Black Sea Freedom of Navigation exercise, where they came in continuous contact with the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Jerry remembers the FUN during a trip to Cairo, Egypt, which ended on a hotel dance floor with the crew enjoying the band’s rendition of the Bangles hit “Walk Like an Egyptian.”

LT Birdsong’s team provided intelligence support to USS Richmond K Turner (CG20) and USS Wainwright (CG28) in the Northern Arabian Gulf during the Iran-Iraq “Tanker War.” This was filled with high anxiety with Iraqi Mirage jets flying nearby every night…not long after USS Stark (FFG31) was devastated by an Iraqi Exocet missile and USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG58) struck a mine.

LT Birdsong joined USS Kitty Hawk (CV63) during her world cruise just before she entered the Red Sea en route to the Mediterranean. According to Jerry, “Landing on an aircraft carrier underway was the most exhilarating experience of my life.” LT Birdsong’s hand-picked team embarked in USS Thomas C Hart (FF1098) on surveillance and intelligence-collection mission.

LCDR Birdsong was permanently assigned to USS Texas as the ship’s Electronic Warfare/Intelligence Officer. In Jerry’s opinion, “Qualification as a ‘Surface Warfare Officer’ is the single most notable achievement of a blue-water Sailor.. I was now trusted to navigate the ship and bring all weapons to bear.”

LCDR Birdsong was promoted to full Commander while serving as Force EW Officer on the COMNAVSURFPAC staff in San Diego. Very few LDOs reach O-5…a truly exceptional achievement. CDR Birdsong rounded out his Naval career with assignments in San Antonio as Executive Officer at a joint facility and a final tour at the National Security Agency.

CDR Birdsong’s personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2), Meritorious Service Medal (2), Navy Commendation Medal, and Navy Achievement Medal (2).

During the entirety of Commander Birdsong’s 38-year career, he was entrusted with the highest level of security clearance, required for his duties as a Cryptologic/Electronic Warfare Officer. Specifics of his achievements will be forever guarded by his Non-Disclosure Agreement.

Following retirement from the Navy in 2001, the Birdsong family returned to San Antonio, home since 1994. Jerry proudly affirms, “We are so grateful to be able to make Texas our home! We are so proud that the City of San Antonio has trademarked the name ‘Military City USA.’ We are among the nation’s finest…active duty and veteran of all services.”

Jerry says, “My passion is for educating our military and veteran communities of their VA home-buying entitlement".

This effort is channeled through his proactive contributions to the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals (VAREP) Outreach Committee vice chairmanship and the San Antonio Coalition for Veterans and Families (SACVF). Jerry is also a Mission-22 Ambassador, dedicated to veteran PTSD-related suicide prevention.
