The Iowa State men’s and women’s track and field teams started the outdoor season at the Terry Long FSU Relays in Tallahassee, Florida, and the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State.
School record gets set
Junior sprinter Rachel Joseph, a first-team All-American in the indoor season, took the track in Tallahassee. Friday saw her re-write the record books in the women’s 200-meter dash.
Joseph previously held the record with a time of 23.40 seconds set last season. Joseph set a new mark for Cyclone sprinters with a blistering time of 23.37 seconds to take first place in the event.
This was Joseph’s astonishing 14th time in her career in which she broke or re-set her own school record.
Men’s 110-meter hurdles shine
The Cyclones had a great showing in the men’s 110-meter hurdles in Tallahassee, placing four in the top nine.
Sophomore Jack Latham led the Cyclones, placing third with a time of 14.03 seconds. Coming in fifth was junior Alec Carr, with a time of 14.08 seconds.
Rounding out the top nine for the Cyclones was sophomore Grayson Hartman (14.81 seconds) in eighth and freshman Joseph Pubrick in ninth (14.88 seconds). This was a strong showing in a competitive event that the Cyclones can use for momentum moving further into the season.
Raleigh Relays
Iowa State’s distance runners took center stage in North Carolina at the Raleigh Relays.
The top finisher on the day for the Cyclones came from the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase. Freshman Sheridan Wheeler placed seventh with a good time of 10:14.27. In a very stacked field, Wheeler showed that she can be a force to be reckoned with moving forward in the event.
The Cyclones will hit the road again next weekend when they compete in the Stanford invite in California and the Midwest Classic in Emporia, Kansas.
