Budgets are moral documents because they reflect values. President Trump’s proposed budget hurts the poorest Americans. These are not values which make America great.”
— The Rev. Jay Lawlor

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, US, February 14, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Rev. Jay Lawlor, Episcopal priest and economist, weighs in on President Trump's proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2019. In a newly released essay on his website, The Rev. Lawlor writes "Budgets are moral documents because they reflect values. President Trump’s proposed budget hurts the poorest Americans. These are not values which make America great."

The Rev. Jay Lawlor offers a critical summary of the President's proposed cuts to food assistance, housing assistance, and Medicaid. He points out the budget would cut spending to food stamps by $17.2 billion in FY2019, and $213 billion over the next decade. Beyond cuts to food assistance, The Rev. Lawlor writes how there would be a $1 billion cut to housing assistance and reductions in Medicaid spending by $250 billion over the next ten years.

With cuts which impact the poorest Americans, the Rev. Lawlor suggests Trump's values are misplaced and they "[...] do not reflect Christian values, the values of other religions, or the values of any people of good will who have compassion for their fellow human beings. Budgets are moral documents because they reflect values. President Trump’s values are clear in his budget."
